Dr. Pete Collier is a Professor of Sociology at Portland State University. He earned both his Master's and Doctorate degrees from Portland State
University. He has taught at PSU since 1991, and is active in service learning and community-based research. From 1993-1997 Pete was the director of
the Recycling Awareness Program, a high school recycling education project co-sponsored by PSU, Portland Public School District #1-J, and the City of
Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services. His current research focuses on role transitions within higher education and health care promotion.
Collin Fellows earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Sociology from Portland State University. After serving as a SFMP mentor in
2005-2006, and the SFMP Program Manager from 2006-2008, Collin is now sharing his expertise by continuing as a consultant for SFMP during 2008-2009.
Having completed two degrees as a returning, first generation student, Collin understands the unique struggles of combining work, school and family
responsibilities. His previous careers included work as a glass artist and a high-tech consultant. He keeps himself balanced by participating in
interests that range from motorcycles and shooting pool, to photography and classical guitar.
Samantha is a graduate of Portland State University and has returned to PSU to work toward achieving her
Master’s degree in Sociology. Coming from a Latino family as a first-generation college student, Samantha is
aware of the unique challenges facing first-generation, minority students in school. She eventually hopes to
work with underrepresented students in education.
Stephanie has lived in Portland for three years now, attending PSU since she was a freshman as a first
generation student. She’s entering her senior year and hopes to graduate with a BA in Sociology and Women’s
Studies. Stephanie is also part of Student Leaders for Service trying to strengthen community-university
relations, where she volunteers with different organization around the Portland metro area. Stephanie enjoys
walking aimlessly around Portland, thrift shopping and cruising Craigslist “free stuff” section.
Heather received her BA in Communication Studies here at PSU and is currently working towards a Master of
Science in Education with a sub-specialization in the Post Secondary Adult Continuing Education (PACE)
program. She has worked in student activities at PCC as well as PSU and recognizes the benefits of getting
involved and staying connected to your campus. An avid sports fan, in her spare time Heather enjoys watching
football (Go Packers!), heavyweight boxing, the occasional LumberJax game as well as spending time with
Sophie the wonder dog.
Alicyn is a dedicated mother of two as well as a returning and first generation college student.
Her BS in Anthropology is expected in June 2009, and from there hopefully a PhD program in medical Anthropology.
When not working on her degree or her two on-campus jobs, she likes to spend time outdoors, read, and create
interesting projects with her family.
